Pulses, including peas, have been a long established key part of the human diet with evidence of pea cultivation dating back to 3000 years BC. Today pulses are being highlighted as key food ingredients as shown by the United Nations General Assembly declaring 2016 to be the “International Year of Pulses”.

Super foods

Ideally, a food ingredient should be nutrient dense and deliver a range of nutrients and associated health benefits like “low” glycaemic index, source of fibres, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Pulses are very high in protein and fibre, and are a significant source of iron, zinc, folate, thiamin, niacin, potassium and magnesium. They are low in fat and according to research from Pulse Canada, consuming just 1/2cup a day, can reduce LDL-cholesterol levels which can reduce the risk of heart-attack and stroke.
